The Tree population field shows the number of trees that fit in your area using rectangular spacing. The result is rounded down — only full-tree positions are counted, so you get a realistic order quantity.

Worked example: a small backyard orchard

Suppose you have a rectangular garden bed that measures 12 meters long by 8 meters wide, and you want to plant apple trees (standard) which need about 9.1 m of space between them.

Result interpretation: Only 1 standard apple tree fits in this bed under the recommended spacing. Apple trees need generous room to spread their canopy. For smaller spaces, consider dwarf or semi-dwarf apple varieties that need less spacing.

Example 1: Planting a half-acre orchard

You have a rectangular plot measuring 50 m × 40 m (0.2 hectares / roughly half an acre). You plan to plant European beech trees, which have a recommended spacing of 7.3 m7.3\ \text{m} (24 ft).

Example 2: Reforesting a 1-acre field with mixed species

You are reforesting a 1-acre rectangular field (about 63.6 m×63.6 m63.6\ \text{m} \times 63.6\ \text{m} if square, but let us say 70 m × 58 m). You want to plant Douglas fir saplings, which need 4.9 m4.9\ \text{m} (16 ft) spacing.

Selecting the right spacing for fruit trees is critical. Apple, pear, and cherry trees each have different canopy requirements. Formula 1: Area of the planting field

This is the standard rectangle area formula. If you already know your plot area, you can enter it directly and the calculator will derive either length or width — whichever you need.

Formula 2: Tree population

The x\lfloor x \rfloor symbol represents the floor function — it rounds each division down to the nearest whole number. This ensures that only complete tree positions are counted. If a row has only 2.7 tree-widths available, only 2 full trees fit.

Why round down? If you tried to squeeze in a "half tree," it would not have enough space to grow properly. Rounding down gives you a realistic, actionable number that reflects actual planting conditions.

Variables explained:

WW – Width of the planting area
SS – Space between trees (center to center)
TT – Total number of trees (rounded down)

Important note: This calculator uses rectangular (square) spacing, where trees are planted in a grid aligned with the plot edges. Frequently asked questions

Why does the tree population round down?

The floor function (x\lfloor x \rfloor) ensures you never count a partial tree position. If a row has only 3.4 tree-widths available, only 3 full trees fit — the remaining 0.4 width is not enough for another tree without crowding. This gives you a realistic, actionable number for ordering saplings.

Can I use this for triangular spacing?

What if my tree species is not in the list?

Select Custom from the dropdown and enter the spacing manually. To find the right spacing, check your nursery's recommendations, consult a local forestry extension office, or look up the species' mature crown diameter — the spacing should be at least equal to the expected mature canopy width.

Why does the area show in "ares" instead of square meters?

The Area field defaults to ares (1 are = 100 m²), which is a common unit for land measurement in many countries. You can switch to square meters, hectares, acres, square feet, or square yards using the unit dropdown next to the area field. The underlying calculation always works in base units — the unit choice only affects how the result is displayed.

Does this calculator account for walkways or access paths?

No, the calculator assumes the entire length and width are available for planting. If you need paths between rows for maintenance access, subtract their width from your plot dimensions before entering them. For example, if your plot is 20 m wide and you want a 1 m path every 10 m, reduce the effective width accordingly.

Can I calculate trees per acre directly?

Yes! Enter 1 acre as the area (use the unit dropdown to select acres), choose your tree species or enter a custom spacing, and the calculator will show the number of trees per acre. Then multiply by your total acreage for a quick estimate. For example, if the calculator shows 150 trees per acre and you have 5 acres, you need approximately 750 trees.

Why does changing the area also change the length or width?

The length, width, and area fields are linked in a two-way relationship. If you edit the area, the calculator adjusts either the length or width to maintain the same mathematical relationship. This is useful when you know your plot's total area but are flexible about its exact shape. Simply lock the dimension you want to keep fixed by editing it last, and the other dimension will adjust.
