Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator
Estimate how much you'll likely spend on a mowing service, or find out your mower's efficiency.
Calculate mowing costs by area or by hour, and determine how long it will take with your own mower.

Introduction / overview
The Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator helps you answer two practical questions: how much will it cost to hire a mowing service, and if you prefer to do it yourself, how long will it take with your own mower. It handles both pricing styles that lawn care companies typically use — charging by the area or by the hour.
✅ Whether you are a homeowner getting quotes from local services, or a DIYer planning your Saturday chore, this calculator gives you a quick, reliable estimate.
Who is this for?
- Homeowners comparing quotes from lawn mowing services.
- DIY gardeners who want to estimate whether their mower can handle the lawn in a reasonable time.
- Lawn care startups pricing their own services by area or by the hour.
- Real estate agents estimating lawn maintenance costs for property listings.
The calculator supports 20 major currencies with live exchange rates, so you can get estimates in your local currency. It also works with both metric and imperial units — switch area units between hectares, square feet, acres, and more. If you are planning a full lawn makeover, you might also find our Grass Seed Calculator and Sod Calculator useful for estimating how much seed or sod you need.

Step-by-step examples
Example 1: Cost by area for a suburban lawn
A local company charges $0.05 per square foot
Your lawn measures 8,000 square feet. Here is how the math works out:
Try it: Select Lawn mowing cost → Per area, enter as the price, pick USD/ft², and enter ft² for the area. The total cost of $400 appears instantly.
Example 2: Cost by hour for a large estate
A landscaper charges $75 per hour
The job is expected to take about 4 hours. The calculation is straightforward:
Try it: Select Lawn mowing cost → Per hour, enter as the hourly rate, and for hours.
Example 3: DIY mowing time for a half-acre lot
Using a standard push mower
Your mower travels at 6 km/h and has a 50 cm (0.5 m) deck. With 80% productivity (accounting for overlap, trimming, and obstacles), your mower's effective coverage is:
Your lawn is 0.5 ha (about 1.25 acres). The estimated mowing time is:
Try it: Switch to Mower efficiency and time, enter km/h speed, cm width, and ha for the area. The calculator shows 2 hrs 5 min.
Common scenarios
Comparing service quotes
You get two quotes — one per area and one per hour. Use the calculator to convert both into a total price for your lawn size so you can compare apples to apples.
Buying a new mower
Compare different mower deck widths and speeds to see how much time each would save you on your specific lawn size.
Estimating lawn size
If you do not know your exact lawn area, use the Mower efficiency mode in reverse: mow for a known time, then check how much area the calculator says you covered.
Riding vs. push mower
A riding mower may be 3× faster and have a wider deck. Enter the specs for each to see the time difference — it often justifies the upgrade for larger lawns.
Tips & best practices
Pro Tip: Mowing productivity rarely reaches 100%. The default of 80% accounts for overlap along edges, obstacles (trees, flower beds, stones), and patches the mower misses on the first pass. For very open, rectangular lawns you can raise it to 90%; for complex shapes with many obstacles, lower it to 70%.
Remember: Service quotes often include extras like edging, trimming, and debris removal. The calculator gives you the base mowing cost — always ask what is included before comparing.
Getting accurate results
- Measure your lawn carefully — use a measuring wheel or online satellite tools. An overestimate of 10% can change your cost noticeably.
- Check your mower's manual for the exact deck width. Many push mowers are 40–55 cm, while riding mowers range from 80–130 cm.
- Track your actual mowing time once and compare it to the estimate — adjust the productivity percentage if needed for future calculations.
- Use the bidirectional engine: if you know the total cost and the area, enter both to find out the effective price per unit area you are paying.
Calculation method / formulas
The calculator uses simple, well-established formulas. Every field is connected by the bidirectional engine — change any value and the others update automatically.
Cost by area
Cost by hour
Mower efficiency (area per hour)
Mowing time
Variable reference
Because all four relations are connected through the bidirectional engine, you can enter any combination of values and the calculator will derive the missing ones. For example, if you know the total cost and the area, the calculator can tell you the effective price per unit area.
Related concepts / background
What influences lawn mowing cost?
Beyond the simple area or hourly rate, several factors can shift the final price:
- Service inclusions: Does the quote cover edging, trimming, weed-eating, and grass disposal? All-inclusive packages cost more but save you the hassle.
- Lawn condition: Overgrown or neglected lawns take longer to mow and may incur a surcharge. Regular mowing keeps costs predictable.
- Frequency discounts: Many companies offer lower per-visit rates for weekly or bi-weekly service compared to one-time jobs.
- Travel distance: Companies may charge more if your property is far from their base of operations to cover fuel and travel time.
How many calories does mowing burn?
Mowing the lawn with a push mower burns approximately 250–300 calories per hour. Over a 2-hour session, that is the equivalent of a 30-minute jog — a nice bonus that turns yard work into light exercise!

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my lawn area accurately?
For a rectangular lawn, measure the length and width in the same unit and multiply them. For irregular shapes, break the lawn into rectangles and triangles, calculate each area, then add them up. Many free online satellite tools can also give you a rough measurement.
Which is cheaper — per area or per hour pricing?
It depends on your lawn's shape and the company's rates. Per-area pricing is predictable and does not depend on how fast the crew works. Per-hour pricing can be cheaper for small, simple lawns but may end up higher if the job takes longer than expected. Use both modes of the calculator to compare.
What is a reasonable mowing productivity percentage?
For most residential lawns, 80% is a solid default. This accounts for the fact that you will overlap along edges, slow down around obstacles, and miss small patches. Very open rectangular lawns can achieve 85–90%, while complex yards with many flower beds, trees, or irregular borders may be closer to 70%.
Can I use this calculator for commercial properties?
Absolutely. The calculator works for any area size. Simply enter the total area of the commercial property, and adjust the mower speed and deck width to match the equipment your crew will use. The currency selector supports 20 major currencies.
How does the bidirectional calculation work?
Every input field is connected — when you change one value, the calculator automatically updates the others. For example, if you know the total cost and the hourly rate, you can enter both to find out how many hours of work that corresponds to. You do not need to decide which field is the "input" and which is the "result."
How much would it cost to mow a 55 yd² lawn?
At $2 per square yard, the cost would be:
Keep in mind that actual rates vary by location, company, and season.
